I use the old screwdriver method too to get them out. If you damage the inside of the hub, just use a dremel tool and a small grinder tip to remove any high spots.

I also have a bearing insert tool too. I learned my lesson many years ago about the wrong and right way to install bearings. Instead of a mallet, I use a bench vice to press slowly press the bearings into place. Works like a charm.
