Door lock malfunction (archive)

I've got a problem not seen in the archives. When my door is closed and NOT locked, and I attempt to open the door from the outside, the door locks on its own. I can see the inside lock knob go down as I push in the external button. The door moves a fraction but not far enough to clear the door post assembly. Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it? John W.
