John -- A weird problem indeed. FWIW, my gut tells me that you've got a bent or worn part that's catching somewhere it's not supposed to. But hey, that's just rank speculation. Let's cut to the chase.

What I would do in your position is to take off the inside door panel (see archives) and sit inside the car. Have an assistant open the door so that you can see the lock/latch mechanism in action. Try to see what's grabbing the lock mechanism.

You may want to do the same to the other door as well. This will give you a frame of reference (i.e., what a working door loocks like) and may show you exactly what to fix and how to fix it.
