The following works well for cars with carbs, others can give advice on application to tii specifics

1. Drain all the old gas. Pull the gas tank and take it to a shop where it can be refurbished. (lot of radiator shops do this service). Old gas will make the car run terribly and
clog everything up!
2. Remove spark plugs, and squirt 5-10 cc's of Marvel Mystery Oil into each
cylinder. Let it sit there overnight.
3. Drain the oil and change. Be sure to prime the filter. This step is not
absolutely necessary if oil looks OK...
4. With a new battery, after the MMO has had a day or two to work, crank the
motor WITH THE COIL DISCONNECTED so it won't start. This will get the oil
pressure up and into the galleys
5. If it cranks easily, then can clean and gap and reinstall the plugs, hook
up the wires and coil and try your luck.
6.Pull the radiator and take it to a shop to get recored and serviced (good time to do a 320i radiator upgrade). Since it gets cold in Boston, I hope that the tii was in a heated garage, because over the years, the antifreeze content will diminish. Running weak antifreeze is not good for the block in freezing conditions.

The motor will smoke and belch CLOUDS of smoke after this procedure, so hope
that your neighbors are forgiving! But if all's well internally it will clear
up and run ok after a bit.

At this point you should r/r the gas tank and boil it out and run a few
gallons of clean gas through those gummed up old carbs. Replacement of ALL
rubber lines is mandatory, gas, brake and cooling. Your tires are surely dry rotted, buy some used tires to get the car rolling. Then wait for that old
exhaust to give up the ghost--those OEM Eberspacher systems rust from the
inside out and may look great externally, but don't count on it.

Good luck
Gordon

What's the VIN for your tii?
What about the electric fuel pump? I would imagine that would be gummed up with old gas?
