Big mirrors came standard when? (archive)

When did BMW switch from the small outside rearview mirror to the large one that is used on late model cars? My previous 74 02 had a small mirror and my current 74 02 has a large mirror. Both cars were totally stock (to include the XAS spare tire) when I bought them. (except for the 8 track that was in my current car, the 02 had been in long term storage).
