If you are getting decelleration backfires I'd bet its a timing issue. When the dizzy backs off on the advance due to decrease change in RPM, the decrease in advance means some fuel gets left unburned, and the exhaust system will be pleased to ignite that for you. BOOM.

A little snap and pop is OK, delk will tell you that this means you've got it just about right. A spectacular bang is not so keen.
