Colin -- When you say the steering is not self-centering, is it tight all around, or is it loose and just wanders all over the place? If it's TIGHT, then MAYBE the steering column is stressed. I had this problem on my 320i, and it was a quick fix.

Try loosening up the nut where the steering column connects to the steering box. There's a clamping mechanism that holds the column onto a splined shaft sticking out of the box -- this is where the adjustment will happen.

Once you've loosened the nut, turn the steering wheel back & forth a few times, maybe while rolling SLOWLY up & down the driveway. Then go back and re-tighten the nut. If there was any stress on the steering column, it should have relieved itself.

If your steering is LOOSE, I have no suggestions other than to hazard a guess: your caster is out of adjustment? Never having lowered a car (I usually jack them up), I can't help you there.

Either way, best of luck!
