Accelertor Pedal (archive)

I have a 74 2002 with a rusted out pedal box and some damage to the surrounding floor board. Fixable enough and I have a new pedal box. Problem though is with the accelerator pedal as most of the rust is right at the location where those ball joint studs stick up. How do I fix this? I'm setting this thing up as a fun track car and so appearance is a secondary factor. Should I just bolt a hinge to the floor and the pedal? I checked the archive and one person said GT3 drivers of 02's prefer to just use the bare arm. Anyone have any experience with this? TIA.
