help with strut shock top nut (archive)

I've got a front strut out of the 02 but can loosen the top nut of the shock. It looks like you have to hold the spring top cover fixed while loosening the top nut. Is this right? Is is the only way? Do I need a vice that can open about 6" for the spring top cover? TIA.
