We just fixed the same problem on my '72 '02 . We used the die grinder to get rid of the rust and then got a sheet of aircraft aluminum and bolted the back of it with three bolts and bolted the front of it with the bolts that bolt in the pedal box. Then, you can just put the ball joint studs into the new piece of metal. It looks and works great.
