If you have the boge inserts, at the very top of the threads you should have a square shape. Believe it or not this tiny feature is what you need to hold on to while you losen the top nut. You have the springs properly compressed right? I had a real headache getting this off on my 76. In the end it was lots of penetrant, gentle tapping to lossen the rust, and big vise grips on the square flats w/ an ofset box wrench on the nut that did the job. Good luck, hope to help.

: I've got a front strut out of the 02 but can loosen the top nut of the shock. It looks like you have to hold the spring top cover fixed while loosening the top nut. Is this right? Is is the only way? Do I need a vice that can open about 6" for the spring top cover? TIA.
