A strap wrench would work. Lay it on the ground sideways and step on it.
Easiest to loosen the nut a little while its still on the car.

: dadbeh, the strut body doesn't appear to be connected to the rod/top nut. I can turn the top nut and the only thing that turns with it is the top spring collar. are you suggesting I wrap this collar with a rag and then use vise grips? The collar is about 6" in diameter...
