Having similar problem but no backfire.Deduced
that either the vacuum advance diaphragm has tear
in it and your car backfires on decelleration or under heavy braking the booster has tear in it. When accelerating does car run ok?Also, distributor
gets gummy from hot oil and coroded between advance plate and ball track.I drove my car with the booster line off(make sure you have an empty road ahead of you!)and plugged and it still did the same thing.Overhauled the dist and the car runs well.YOU CAN'T DRIVE THE CAR WITH THE VACUUM
ADVANCE LINE UNHOOKED OR PLUGGED!My car still has the entire emission controls on it.
