Stub axle removal (archive)

I'm replacing my rear wheel bearings (and upgrading my rear brakes). I have the 36mm nut, drive flange, backing plate and half shafts disconnected, and have loosened the stub axle (put the nut on backwards, place a scrap of 2x4 over it and take out your hostilities).

The splined part of the stub axle seems to be hanging on the spacer sleeve when I try to drive it through. The Hayes manual says, punch it through. Am I missing anything??

Thanks!!

John N.
