Both manual trans and automatic trans cars have flywheels. Nearly identical too, just the AT is deeper. I should know, I tried to sell my old AT unit on Ebay (no bids). I had to replace it with a manual trans type for my 5-speed conversion. Any BMW of th era had a quibo of some sort. I would guess that somebody calling something a flex disc is referring to the quibo since the clutch disc is NOT flexible.

: : : The "flex disc", "guibo", is the rubber dampner that mounts between the output shaft of the transmission (manual and auto) and the driveshaft. The clutch disc is the asbestos-like disc that's between the flywheel and pressure plate.

: The flexplate is what is on an automatic car instead of a flywheel, the flex disc (somtiems referred to as a "guibo" joint) goes behind the trans at the leading end of the driveshaft or propeller shaft.
: The clutch (or friction) disc goes between the flwheel and the pressure plate on a manual trans car.
: hope this helps Brian
