Trunk- lid Gasket (archive)

Just had car paint and now need to replace old trunk gasket. The question is - do you split the gasket to get it around the brackets holding the trunk-lid up, or do you take off the trunk-lid and keep the solid piece of gasket in tack?? Any help or suggestions appreciated - thanks.
