If you run the car with no belt for a minute, that will either confirm or deny a crank related problem. Alternator brushes make a lot of noise when they go, so does an old slipping belt. While you are at it, remove the compressor belt, and then add the belts back one at a time to see when the noise comes back.(Assuming the engine is ok) Bad bearings tend to thump and rumble. Squeaks are usually associated with belts, alternators, clutch release bearings, cracked rings, or blown head gaskets. Then again, those last two are as likely to be heard as a high pitch rattle. Ben
