Hi! 4 of my exhaust studs need replacing, and the other 4 are pretty rusty and don't thread real well. I want to replace the whole set of them.

Could I have some advice from anyone who has ever done this. Where did you buy the new studs? Does someone sell a kit that has new thread inserts or did you custom build it? Has anyone considered using stainless steel inserts? I think the only problem with the stainless steel might be the expansion rate of the cylinder head as compared to the aluminum cylinder head (it is aluminum, correct?).

Any input will be greatly appreciated

Are the threads stripped out? If so you will need a thread insert kit. If not, run a metric tap through the holes to clean them up. Get new studs and install with anti-sieze. Studs available at most BMW parts houses. Thread repair kits should be available through them or your local parts house. To remove studs try the two nuts jammed together method. Watch the stud carefully so you don't break it off, if it doesn't move don't go any further, wait until the head is off to put in thread inserts, much easier on bench.
