putting in a set of bilsteins in my front struts. reading the archives there are two different opinions. one says to put oil in the strut before you slide in the bilstein. the second says no oil with bilsteins. a seperate concern is if you don't use oil then how do you prevent the shock from ultimately rusting to the inside the strut? that's the way the old ones were on my struts and they were a bear to get out. I think the best way would be to fill the space between the insert and strut with anti freeze. I belive that the instructions with koni gas shocks say to use anti freeze because oil will damage the seals. I don't know if this is true for bilsteins. It is not a problem with oil only inserts. You need something to transfer heat and prevent water from entering the gap. If water gets in, in a cold climate it will feeeze and crush the insert. I've seen this happen, it's ugly.
