Here's a secret:

Instead of attempting to loosen and remove the hinge bolts with the hood up, try it with the hood DOWN!

From inside the engine compartment, look at the front clip assembly, just in front of the radiator. There will be two triangular openings that correspond with the hinge bolts when the hood is closed. If you remove your front grilles, these triangular cut-outs make it possible to remove the bolts when the hood is down.

Incredible but true! Makes the whole operation a hell of a lot easier and safer. Pass this tip on to all of your 2002 buddies.
