To the best of my knowledge, there is no metal cutting required in the engine bay. The E21 was designed to take the small six in its engine bay (323i). It does require the 323i front cross member, small six transmission and driveshaft, and a different exhaust. I suppose that there is some metal cutting of the rear apron if you want to use the 323i dual exhaust.

A 323i weighs approx. 231 lbs more than a Euro-spec 318i. This includes the weight of a dual exhaust and other components and is not just engine weight.

My 323i has always seemed well balanced. I have never driven a 320i so cannot say how it compares to that car, but it isn't that much different from my tii.
