Thanks for the input, however you mention the 323i. Is that the same small six that is in the E30 325i. I believe that the 323i is a Eurospec car and its availability is limited. I hope that it is that same block, because I took a look at the six conversion in the 'house of worship links and it looks like a E30 325i motor and he did a lot of reductive metal work. Please clarify,
thanks-

As I said in my 2nd posting, I thought I was on the E21 board, so a lot of what I said applied to the 320i.
I am pretty sure that you have to modify the front valance to mount the small six radiator (moved fwd to provide clearance) and use an electric fan. The driveshaft would definitely have to be modified and re-balanced. There is an article in the Sep '92 European Car about a '71 2002 with a small six (from a 323i) installed.
The 2.3 litre small six is the same basic block as the 2.5 from a 325i. The 2.5 has a 4 mm larger bore and a 1.8 mm smaller stroke, along with using Bosch Motronic engine management instead of the K-Jetronic of the 2.3. This results in the 2.5 litre having about 24 more hp than the 2.3 litre out of a 323i. And yes, the 2.5 is a lot easier to find as the 323i is Eurospec.
