I've done both. Just trailered a 71 for 60 miles. Word of advice. Don't do it yourself. I learned my lesson.
Also did it 60 miles on a tow dolly with front wheels up on another car. It was a "stick" (4-spd). I had no problems. Put it in neutral and disconnect the driveshaft.
Think of it this way...nobody ever warns you not to drive your car 60 miles...I may be naive, but it's basically the same thing...just do what the previous post said and watch the fluid level.
