Equal length headers are used when the engine designer intends for all cylinders to tune at the same RPM point. This will produce a higher torque peak but will narrow the usable range. To obtain a broader (less peaky) torque curve the tube lengths can be altered to provide multiple tuning peaks. Race engines will often use equal tuned length headers but the peaky torque curve then requires a five or six speed trans to be used. Street engines will often use staggered length headers to provide a flatter, wider, more driveable torque curve.
