The key question is... are they made of the same mataerial or something different? If it's the same, then the shear will be the same. If not, then you need to look it up.

My vote, completely seat-of-the-pants, is that they are the same material. Why not? It's almost certainly a carbon (heat treatable) steel.

Metric/Euro spec fasteners are no longer unusual in the US, so the specs ought to be available in common engineering handbooks. Try a web search, or look at McMaster-Carr's web site (www.mcmaster.com).


Anybody out there tried using 5/16" diameter grade 8 bolts for the outsides of the rear half shafts (where they bolt to the spindles). A 5/16" diameter bolt fits great, they are cheap and readily available. Came with 8MM 10.9 grade bolts. My internet searching shows grade 8 and 10.9 to have practically identical tension load strength. No luck finding good shear strength data.
