Anybody out there tried using 5/16" diameter grade 8 bolts for the outsides of the rear half shafts (where they bolt to the spindles). A 5/16" diameter bolt fits great, they are cheap and readily available. Came with 8MM 10.9 grade bolts. My internet searching shows grade 8 and 10.9 to have practically identical tension load strength. No luck finding good shear strength data.Maybe im getting confused about the different grades (sae vs. metric) but i recently bought new bolts for my half-shafts and had to check what had been used by BMW originally. Every bolt that i found (4 different cars) where grade 8.8 ( that would be grade 5 (sae) ?)
Am i correct or have all the half-shaft bolts on my 4 different cars been changed to weaker ones by the PO's?
Benkku
