What alternator is the 80amp upgrade. I have a 320i 65amp on my 02 now.
You can scroll down to alt. upgrades for more discussion. Following ia a great post from Hamish in this subject, hopefully he doesn't mind the reproduction. Sure will be nice to have the search function again (webmaster-hint, hint!)
Also, it may be possible to upgrade you current regulator to 80 or 90 amp.
I swapped a 318 internally regulated into my 76 and it was as simple as swapping the bushings and getting a slightly longer belt.
If I recall correctly it is an 80 amp unit.
You will also need the tensioning bracket, as it has a slight offset over the standard unit. You need to get new ring terminals to
fit over the larger posts and a couple of the wires (for the external regulator, i'm told) go unused. My reference was a posting
from the archives, probably titled "318 alternator". The belt that worked for me was a 35515, as in 35.5 inches. If you decide
to go this route and the search engine is still down, drop me a line and I'll check to see which wires I put where.
All in all a really simple swap - I bet you could keep the 318 bushings too if you just used the 318 block mounting bracket.
Problem on mine is that it is very difficult (if not impossible) to remove without taking off the fan.
One other note - because my 76 has a fan shroud, the fan nut rubs under hard cornering. I put up with the noise for about a
week and by then it had machined a neat little slot for silent operation.
Hope this helps.
