I am going to perform the first mechanical surgery (I know it's very minor)
by changing my old radiator (on a 76) with a brand new one I got a few weeks ago.
Any advice to the novice?

Thank you

It's a pretty simple job. Hope you got a 3 core or 320i radiator to avoid heating problems in the future, the stock radiators are marginal at best. If you live in a warm climate, go with a new 71C or 75C thermostat, drain all coolant and replace with fresh coolant. Also replace or test the radiator cap. Now is also good time to replace water hoses and check water pump bearing for loosness and water pump for leakage. Also check the fanbelt and replace if glazed or cracked.
