Remove the shift lever, cut BELOW the ball, and add about 3/4" of metal. Have someone weld it for you if you don't have the stuff to do it. You may want to use more metal if you can (like 1"), but somewhere between 1/2" and 3/4" should work well, as long as you don't have to go bending the shift linkage.
