You're forgetting that the tii has a 100% pure mechanical fuel injection system. When you drive at higher elevations, the fuel injection system can't compensate for the thinner air and the end result is a overly rich fuel/air mixture.

Nevertheless, it's not a bad idea to have a qualified '02 mechanic check out the entire car from one end to the another.
