i just blew up a 245 and paid 500 to replace. "new" tranny feels really good- better than its predecessor, but it is always a crap shoot unless you know actual mileage of donor car. i still believe they are very strong trannys.

The Getrag 245 5-speed (such as found in zillions of 320i cars made from 1980 to 1982) will easily handle 175 hp. This is the tranny Pete McHenry usually uses for S14 conversions. They are plentiful in junkyards and relatively cheap (I bought mine for $175). The Getrag 240 used in the 320i and later E30 318i is a weaker tranny. Hope this helps.
