Oil additives are not necessary for a relatively healthy engine. IMHO, additives are a waste of money. Sometimes you can slow oil burning with something like STP but these newer additives don't excite me. I have nothing to steer me from them except spending years working for an Exxon distributor. As long as you are using a good quality oil, and filter, and changing regularly (3000 miles), you are doing the best for your engine. If I had a new car, I would consider using synthetic oil, but I don't think you would reap any benefit from changing with an older car. Especially a 26 year old one.
