the engine isn't stock, it has header, 2 dual 40DCOE webers, higher pref. cam, 8mm spark wire, i think it has the bosch Red coil in it, is the blue better for the electonic ign. or would and MSD be better, do you even use a coil with electonic ign.? I'm very new with all of this. Are you saying that all i need to make my car have an electronic ign. is to put Petronix in the distributor.

The red coil is the high performance coil originally designed for the tii with a resister wire. A resister wire does the same thing as a ballast resister. It reduces the voltage across the points so they don't burn up. The red coil has the highest output and as long as there is a ballast resister with it then this coil is ok. The blue coil is almost as good as a red but it is designed to be used without a ballast resister.

An MSD is a Multiple Spark Dishcarge. Its function is to provide multiple sparks at the time of the cylinder firing to provide a better burn. It is a good upgrade but not necessary. It usually helps the engine start and idle better and eliminates high rpm miss. The MSD unit is used in addition to the coil.

Electronic ignition refers to replacing the points. Another name is breakerless ignition. Pertronix uses a magnetic pick up to replace the points, Crane uses an optical pickup and another small box to do something (what I don't know). Pull off the dist. cap, the points or electronic ignition is located in there. Also look for what looks like a capactior attached to the side of the distributer. The purpose of this is to keep the points from burning by soaking up stray voltage when the points open. Yes, coils are used with electronic ignition.
