Ditto on the Pertronix. A great help in starting, idling, and ease of maintenance. I bought mine (part #1847 from La Jolla Independent), and it has outlasted my car. Best $60 I spent all year. 2002Haus should have it for about the same price.

Another thing about an old '02 is to check that the radiator is not clogged. A 3-row recore or upgrade to 320/Pinto would be beneficial.

Another good thing to check (and this probably won't cost much, if anything) is the gound points on the car. Check your battery cables, ground straps, and instrument ground wires at the first hint of gauge bounce. Otherwise, have fun with your '02!
