I have the Clardy system in my '76. It hasn't worked since
I bought it several months ago, but the previous owner swore
it blew cold before he put it in storage. (yea right) So I
just made sure I could turn the compressor by hand and
figured I'd be able to fix it. But I need some help. Does this system have a low pressure switch? There are 2 switches on the console - one is the blower speed, and the other I'm guessing is the thermostat. If so which position
would be max cool and is there an off position? The compressor has a label that says "FACTORY AIR" on it. Is this the original compressor that came with the system? Also has anyone ever tried swapping consoles from other systems? I'd rather try mounting a stereo above the vents rather than below. The shifter kinda blocks the controls.
This forum is great! I'd appreciate any input. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the Clardy system. I am familiar with the Fridgiking and Behr as well as other A/C systems. You probably have a York compressor as this compressor was pretty common back in the 70's. If it has a low pressure switch, it is probably located on the dryer. If you see 2 wires coming out of it this is it. Pull the connector and jump it to complete the circuit but don't run it for long like this. This will get the compressor going so it can be charged. The switch with the blower motor speed should also engage the clutch when it is turned on. This should be your on off switch. The other one controls a thermostatic switcht that turns the compressor on and off in relation to temperature of the evaporator. Usually turning it clockwise lowers the temp to max cool. Once the system is operating, you can verify this by turning the switch. Whichever stop it engages the clutch closest to is the min cool. Haven't got a clue the factory air label. All 02 A/C's were aftermarket though if this helps any. As far as a stereo goes, have you considered a remote mounted tuner and CD deck? I have this in my tii with a Behr A/C unit. Where the stereo goes I placed the gauges and the stereo control is handheld.
