Jason,
There are lots of little, inexpensive things you can do to make your 2002 easier to live with and more hassle-free. An electronic ignition kit, such as the pertronix, is a good idea. You can swap an internal regulator alternator from a 320i (65 amp) or 318i (80amp) for the stock 35 or 45 amp alternator. This also eliminates the external mechanical regulator. Your lights will be brighter and you will have more power to run stereo equipment or extra lights. Speaking of which, an upgrade to H4 european halogen headlights costs about $75.00 and makes a huge differance in night visibility. A late '70s 528i or 530i starter bolts on, looks original, and spins the engine much faster than the stock 2002 starter. A rebuilt one costs about $125.00. This is less of a problem on square light cars like your '76, but 2002s have small brake lights. A small, discreetly mounted third brake light in the rear window will reduce the chances of being rear ended by a daydreaming SUV driver on a cell phone. A bigger, but very worthwhile modification is installation of a 320i 5-speed tranny. This is a common modification, and all parts to make it a bolt-in are readily available. Makes the car much more relaxed on the freeway, especially the '76 which (I think) came with a 3.90 differential instead of the 3.64 that other years came with. Hope this info helps!
