Main Pulley Fell Off Today - A Question (long) (archive)

Today my main pulley FELL OFF MY CAR!! Just got the new carb installed yesterday, car ran great then this happens.

I was on my way out my driveway, a very long one, when i heard a noise under the car. I thought it was a branch so I backed up to free it. WHen I backed up, I saw a small trail of oil. Opened the hood, and saw the bottom pulley was loose, no bolt, and the belt was off. A small amount of oil was coming out of end of crank. I drove car very gingerly back to the house. Almost at house, I heard the pulley come off. I guess it was at 1400 rpm or so. It ran off into the woods and hasnt been seen since. I have a pulley from a donor car.

My question: Was the oil just from the pulley not being tight against the seal or maybe just out of balance by being loose? I hope so. BTW I have never touched this bolt and I will retorque it to specs.
