Those early round taillights are just not big or bright enough. After being rear-ended 3 times in 2 years, I decided to be proactive. The last 5mph bump cost $3k and two months in the shop. Parts were hard to get and the rubber bumper strips were NLA. Try putting brighter bulbs and you will pay the price. Plastic lenses are about $75 each. I had already sprayed the reflectors with chrome paint and polished the plastic lenses with Meguires plastic cleaner and polish. I added the rear shelf mount brake light in addition to a high rear mount LED lightbar (2)

JC Whitney has a bunch or lights available also.

I have also tried the Hella Porsche Rear Fog light which is bright but like my bumpers with a clean look. Another idea is to replace the rear reflectors with the lighted side markers. The problem for a newly painted back panel is that drilling or hole punching for these fixtures can crack the surrounding paint.

All said and done, I haven’t been rear ended in 2 years!!!
