My 68 1600 has no lower trim, the 70 I am about to buy does. Also the longer bumpers around the sides.

As mentioned, check the plate in the engine bay. I'm not sure if the later 1600s had the double pot brakes or not. I know my 68 has the awful single pot brakes. There is a specific 1600 section on Bimmers.com.
