TT has it right, must be *very* loose both on the base plates and on the brace mounts. I've also found that a little persuasion with a hammer handle between the "tubes" sort of twisting the bar helps to align the holes. I'd also say definitely no to drilling new ones. Also I've seen the "tabs" mounted either over or under the lip on the back of the engine compartment. This is the second car to have this brace, and I agree it's kind of a PITA to get installed, but worth it. Good luck!
