First - decide where you want to race - SCCA, HSR, SVRA, VARA, BMW CCA Club Racing, NASA, you get the picture.

Second - get a rulebook, decide what class you want to race in - stock, prepared, improved touring, modified, GT.

I think that most '02s will be running the same minimum weight, however the earlier cars are lighter, thus easier to get to minimum weight, so you can add more safety and structural rigidity with the cage, and add ballast where you need it to get the car balanced and to the proper weight.

MY suggestion would be to get the cleanest, straightest chassis with the least rust or corrosion possible to start off with, less work later, then build the suspension and drivetrain to suit the class you'll be running in.

And most of all remember to HAVE FUN.
