Paul,
check first to make sure the caliper bolts are tight. If they are, check the wheel bearing; if it is adjusted too loose, it will knock when you go over bumps. If the wheel bearing is OK, check the ball joint on the side that is knocking. If it is worn, it, too, will knock when going over bumps in the road. Hope this helps.
