You do not explain how you find your battery is dead but If you unplug it with the same result, I can suggest the following:

An old and partly defective starter will drain the power in no time, giving the idea that the battery is low or alternator defective. Will start one time and not the minute after.

Took me more than 9 months until I was told about this possibility and changed the starter to resolve it.
