new pads, new rotors (archive)

Hi. I put brand new rotors on my 74 non-tii and I now am trying to put new pads into the calipers as well. The pads seem much too thick to shove in there. One of two things has happened: pistons are not pressed in enough or pads are just too thick and need to be shaved down. I pushed in on the pistons with a piece of wood, the shims for the pads, the old pad, everything. They don't go back any farther (unless it's supposed to be REALLY hard to press them back??)Anyone got any tricks to shoving it all in there the first time?? Seems quite a bit too thick.

thanks in advance for the suggestions,
leroy
