Hello,

I'm on my 3rd 2002 and 1st tii. My mechanic and I are puzzled by my car dieseling when I turn my car off after it has warmed up. I do have an aftermarket ignition, and I gapped my plugs 0.005 bigger. Also, I hear the fuel pump when I turn the ignition on so I'm assuming it's aftermarket (I haven't looked for it yet). Some people tell me to replace the plugs and/or check the fuel pump rating (w/c I shall do tomorrow). I was just wondering if anybody else has experienced this, and if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Joel

BTW - My mechanic already spent 10 hours on the timing. It does run well once started and warmed up, and the car idles OK now.

"Dieseling" or as i've heard it called "running on" is caused by carbon deposits in the combustion chamber that become redhot as in glowing hot and then these deposits begin to act as a "spark plug" combusting whatever fuel remains in the system after you turn the ignition of. You could try using different brands of fuel in hopes of finding one that leaves less carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, or the engines head has to be removed and "decarbonized" meaning that you either scrape carbon buildup off or use a drill with a mild wire wheel especially since the bmw has an aluminum head. When i owned an MGB years ago (never again) i had to pull the head off every couple of years an clean the carbon deposits out, because the MGB was really bad about that kind of thing.
