That carbon will raise compression, but not in a controlled way. It will also tend to cause hot spots. Both lead to detonation, which is bad.
Scrape the carbon off with a piece of wood or plastic scraper. I think there are some things that might soften it first. Just be careful not to score the cylinder walls and take care for the cylinder tops - they are aluminum.
Removed my head and found carbon layers on the front piston top and some on the other ones. The motor has approx 110K on it.
Does it affect performance if you leave the carbon there, and if you want to remove it what is the best way.
