I wouldn't recommend running such a big cam with only 8.5:1 compression. If you had at least 9:1 or better yet 9.5:1 then I would agree. I would take the blue coil off and run a bosch red coil and something to get rid of the points like a pertronix ignitor. As for the distributor you would most likely want to run a tii distributor which has only mechanical (centrifugal) advance. The only one you can get new is the 002 whereas the tiis came with a bosch 008, which was superseded by the 009. Also many people do not know that the tiis had a larger center resonator and rear muffler than the carbureted 02s which in no doubt played a part in the reason they have more horsepower than a carbureted 02. And remember if you are taking in more air and fuel(your 38/38) you are making more exhaust and therefore need to get rid of it faster (tii resonator and muffler). Hope this answers your questions.

I have a 71 motor that is rebuilt and I believe the compression is somewhere around 8.5:1. I have a tii exhaust manifold running into a stock exhaust. I am going to keep that. I want to put on a shrick 292 with springs and a weber 38/38 with a gasket matched intake manifold. I am going to run a blue coil with stock igntion but one thing remains yet to be figured out: What distributor is the best for this setup? Also, many people do not know that the tiis had a larger center resonator and rear muffler than the carbureted 02s and this was no doubt at least part of the reason for their extra 30 horsepower over a carbureted 02.

I remember reading about a vacuum retard and a vacuum advance and I checked the bosch books and there are like 15 different distributors. Someone please clue me in where the differences are. What the hell should I run for my car?

Is there anyway to classify all of those distributors? Would I be fine sticking with the one I have now - being that they are all the same?

HELP!
