I've read many times that you should only use a 292 cam with 9.5:1 compression or higher (search the archives it has been covered many times)
A better setup may be to go with the 284 cam, with a standard vacuum advance distributor & convert to electronic ignition like pertronix or crane & the red coil
I have a 71 motor that is rebuilt and I believe the compression is somewhere around 8.5:1. I have a tii exhaust manifold running into a stock exhaust. I am going to keep that. I want to put on a shrick 292 with springs and a weber 38/38 with a gasket matched intake manifold. I am going to run a blue coil with stock igntion but one thing remains yet to be figured out: What distributor is the best for this setup?I remember reading about a vacuum retard and a vacuum advance and I checked the bosch books and there are like 15 different distributors. Someone please clue me in where the differences are. What the hell should I run for my car?
Is there anyway to classify all of those distributors? Would I be fine sticking with the one I have now - being that they are all the same?
HELP!
