I have a 71 motor that is rebuilt and I believe the compression is somewhere around 8.5:1. I have a tii exhaust manifold running into a stock exhaust. I am going to keep that. I want to put on a shrick 292 with springs and a weber 38/38 with a gasket matched intake manifold. I am going to run a blue coil with stock igntion but one thing remains yet to be figured out: What distributor is the best for this setup?

I remember reading about a vacuum retard and a vacuum advance and I checked the bosch books and there are like 15 different distributors. Someone please clue me in where the differences are. What the hell should I run for my car?

Is there anyway to classify all of those distributors? Would I be fine sticking with the one I have now - being that they are all the same?

HELP!

You could run the existing distributor. You could have the existing distributor recurved. You could get a new 002 distributor. You can get a rebuilt 008 distributor (without vacuum advance). Each successive option will give you marginally better performance over the previous option. For the best performance, go to someone like Jack Fahuna who can blue print/recurve the unit (new or used). A new distributor straight out of the box can be very disappointing if you check them on a scope. (Actually, a recurved vacuum advance distributor would possibly out perform a tii distributor taken straight from the box.)

The Bosch blue coil is correct if you retain the points & condenser.

I agree with other posts that a 284 cam will be a better choice with 8.5 pistons. I also agree that a tii exhaust is in order for better volumetric efficiency.

Hope this helps.
