Rather than rebuilding which would be way too expensive ( figure on about $200 in parts just for bearings and seals, not to mention what it costs to replace the ring and pinion gears) you should simply find a used limited slip differential and eliminate the potential for broken spider gears. I have used limited slips in both 3.64 and 3.91 ratios if you are interested. Price is $250 .

I have been hearing a loud clanking noise from underneath the car, where the frequency increased with increased rpm or wheel speed. As best I can tell the noise was coming out from the differential. I discovered that I can only hand turn the drive shaft about one turn, in either direction, before it hits a stop. Can anyone diagnose this? If the diff. needs rebuilding, is this something a home mechanic can expect to handle, or is this best left for the pros?
